Merino Casquettes

Our Merino casquette is a luxuriously soft hat. It's made from super lightweight merino wool from New Zealand. It's lightweight, yet extremeley effective at wicking perspiration  while keeping your head warm. Merino ribbing comes down over the neck and ears, or can be folded up. It's small enough to go in your pocket, yet bounces into action as soon as you put it on your head. $36.

What People are Saying

Bill Strickland, at-large editor of Bicyling Magazine and owner of many hats, put it best when he wrote that our hat was the best he's ever worn. Strickland writes:I’ve started long rides in 37-degree rainstorms with the Schoeller side out to stay dry, pulled the cap off while pedaling, turned it inside-out and ridden comfortably with the wool side out once the deluge stops, flipped up the lining that covers the ears and back of the head when the sun came fully out from the clouds, then switched back to water-resistant mode as gloom and rain came on again — ideal temperature management throughout a five-plus-hour ride that varied by more than twenty degrees in conditions from sideways cannon-blasts of near-hail to eye-squinting sun.

Our Story

We have been delighting customers with New Zealand merino wool cycling hats for almost two years now. We launched out as DiSanto Clothing in the Fall of 2011, selling at bike trade shows and making customized hats for local cyclocross teams here in San Francisco and Santa Cruz. In July, of 2012, Fiona Gow took over as owner of the company and changed the name to the Gaelic  Gobha Clothing in July, 2012.

Our marquee product -- the reversible soft-shell/merino-wool cap -- really is a unique garment, representing the warmest hat that will fit comfortably under a helmet, without overheating the rider like other such garments.

Several yeas ago we became concerned about hearing hearing people complain that they didn't like to ride their bikes to work because they would arrive cold or wet or sweaty, or all of the above.

We want more people riding bikes, and we believe helping people remain comfortable and presentable is the best way to achieve that.

That's important to us because we ride our kids to school on a four-seat quadruplet, go bike camping as a family several times every year, race cyclocross every fall and winter, and ride our bikes to work every day in the San Francisco fog and rain. Beginning in 2008 we began sewing caps, testing fabrics, modifying patterns, until we'd produced our 100th prototype, and what we view as the perfect hat. We've now improved the outdoor lives of hundreds of customers, and we'd love to do the same for you.

Why Merino Wool

Merino is unique in its ability to keep you warm in winter, and cool in summer. Wool itself naturally absorbs a lot of moisture without you feeling wet. This is perfect for cyclists, as it absorbs moisture from sweating as well as moisture in the air, and then releases it for evaporation, without the rider ever feeling damp. Wool also retains heat very well which increases comfort for riding in colder temperatures.  Merino wool is also ultra fine and soft, which make it incredibly comfortable to wear next to the skin.

Our Suppliers

Levana Textiles
Our merino wool hails from Levana Textiles, located in Levin, a small textile town in New Zealand, nestled between the rugged Tararua Ranges and the Tasman Ocean. It would be hard to find cleaner air and water than this region provides. This purity goes into the merino wool they produce, which is 100 percent chemical free. They also treat their sheep humanely and are a non-mulesing operation.

Levana has very stringent quality control.  The company conducts strict laboratory tests to examine fabric for any faults and to make sure it meets international standars. Levana is an Invista accredited mill, and is also proudly ISO 9001 certified — an international qualification awarded to companies who meet strict Quality Management System criteria.

Schoeller Dynamic

Schoeller of Switzerland is renowned for it's comfortable, durable, performance fabrics. Schoeller is on the cutting edge of new textile technologies for sport and fashion, with a focus on ecological safety and durable design. We use a tightly woven softshell fabric designed to be breathable, yet water repellant. It feels comfortable next to the skin, yet is durable enough to last ride after ride,  wash after wash.
